WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART ARCHIVAL STORAGE FACILITY

GKV was hired for Complete Architectural Design Services for the design and construction of a 120,000 SF archival storage facility to store the museum’s collection of fine photographs, paintings and sculpture. The design of the facility included a 2000 SF environmentally controlled cold storage room for the Whitney’s photographic collection. The project included design and coordination of all mechanical, electrical and plumbing and fire detection and suppression systems as well as all security and surveillance.

The Whitney Museum required that the design of the warehouse space be efficient and maximize storage space for their collection and allow for proper and adequate movement of large sculptural pieces. Environmental control of the main storage room and the cold box was paramount to protect the collection stored in the facility. The storage spaces required tight security and control. Finally, the Whitney asked that the space have a pleasant and bright appearance, while holding strictly to budget.
